Registers of doctors, psychologists and training and examination centres

Recognised doctors on our register need to undertake train driver medicals in accordance with the law, including the requirements set out in Schedule 1 of The Train Driving Licences and Certificates Regulations 2010. A drivers' personal GP cannot carry out their medical for their train driving licence.

There are elements of the medical which must be carried out face to face and cannot be done remotely. It is not possible to pass a train driving licence medical without completing tests which can only be taken on a face to face basis.

Medicals will normally be arranged by the driver's employer.

A driver must not drive trains if they fail a medical, or fail to take one.

Train operators/the infrastructure manager need to maintain records of their train driving licence medicals. .

We welcome applications to join our register of recognised doctors.

We have published specific guidance and an application form on how to apply to be a recognised doctor, psychologist or training and examination centre for train driving licences.

We aim to complete all checks and inform the applicant of our decision within three weeks of receiving an application. On receipt of the application, we may contact the relevant party to clarify or get more information.

There is no expiry date once we add a professional to our register, but we expect doctors to advise us if there are any changes which may impact their ability to carry out examinations and training.

If we decline an application for recognition as a recognised doctor, psychologist or training and examination centre, you have the option to appeal against our decision. The appeal criteria and process is set out in our guidance document.

We may take professionals off the register if we have any evidence that they no longer meet the criteria for recognition. For example, this includes continued registration with the relevant professional bodies (for example, the General Medical Council (GMC) or the British Psychological Society (BPS)).

We also need to be able to contact professionals in our register. If their contact details have changed, and they have not let us know, we may remove them if we are unable to contact them when we audit the register.
