Components

The British Transport Police (BTP) are the national police force for the railways providing a policing service to rail operators, their staff and passengers throughout England, Wales and Scotland.

When incidents occur

We work in conjunction with the British Transport Police (BTP), and the Rail Accident and Investigation Branch (RAIB) to investigate the causes of incidents. In all circumstances we have a role in investigating potential breaches of health and safety.

However, only BTP can investigate serious criminal offences and decide whether there is sufficient evidence to bring charges. BTP investigations will take precedence in these investigations and RAIB will provide technical and scientific support.

In cases where the BTP do not have precedence, RAIB will lead the investigation into the cause of the accident/incident.

In cases where RAIB have decided not to investigate

On occasions where RAIB does not investigate, we will provide technical and scientific support to the BTP. We will also look into both technical and root cause failings in the management of health and safety, and consider the possibility of pursuing criminal charges arising under health and safety law. For further information see our enforcement section.
