Rail Regulator calls for ticket machine price guarantee

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) is calling on train operators to refund passengers after its new research showed that overall 1 in 5 mystery shoppers selected a more expensive ticket than necessary or were at risk of a penalty fare when using a ticket machine.

An ORR spokesperson said: "Yesterday we published our report on the introduction of DOO on GTR – Southern which confirmed that Driver Only Operation is a safe method of working. As with all types of train dispatch, including dispatch by station staff and guards, this requires suitable equipment, proper procedures and competent staff in place.

Ian Prosser, HM Chief Inspector of Railways, said: "Following a thorough review of GTR-Southern’s method and implementation of Driver Only Operation, ORR is satisfied that with suitable equipment, proper procedures and competent staff in place, it is a safe method of working.
