The ORR board intends to appoint Joanna Whittington as chief executive on an interim basis from 16 January 2016, allowing for a handover period before Richard leaves ORR. Joanna joined the ORR board in March 2014 as executive director of railway markets and economics. An open competition for the role of chief executive will be advertised in due course.
Following the announcement, Richard Price said:
"It has been a great privilege to be chief executive of the Office of Rail and Road. The last five years have seen have seen big changes to the ORR, a step-up in its professionalism and engagement, and an expanded remit including monitoring England’s national road network and economic regulation of the Channel Tunnel.
"It has been a real privilege to work with so many talented people across the road and rail industries, as well as the ORR’s own really outstanding staff. Together we have improved the safety of the railways and pushed for better and more efficient services for rail and road users.
"I wish Stephen Glaister, Joanna Whittington, and the staff of the ORR all the very best for the future in pursuing these goals."
