Network Rail efficiency

In the five years between April 2019 to 31 March 2024, Control Period 6, Network Rail spent £67.4 billion (2023-24 prices), to operate, maintain, renew and enhance the national rail infrastructure in Great Britain.

Today, we’ve published our April 2022 to March 2023 Annual Efficiency and Finance Assessment of Network Rail.

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has today published its annual assessment of Network Rail’s efficiency and wider financial performance for 2021-2022, alongside the findings of a review into employment costs in the rail industry.

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has seen encouraging progress in its first assessment of how efficiently Network Rail is delivering its five-year plans, which run from 1 April 2019 - 31 March 2024.

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has seen encouraging progress from Network Rail to improve its efficiency plans and delivery in Scotland, however more needs to be done.
